Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
